Epilogue

“Kick it, David!” Emily shouted as the soccer players surged down the field. Maybe he heard her. He kicked, then grinned as the ball sailed into the net.

Trey was the first one to reach him, closely followed by Alison, red hair gleaming in the sun. They pounded him on the back. Next to Emily, baby Lisa lurched forward in her stroller, pounding the tray with her rattle.

Emily dropped a kiss on her daughter’s soft black curls. The baby looked more like Nick every day, with those deep blue eyes and blue-black hair. “Your brother made a goal. You cheer.”

Lisa gave her a grin that showed her two teeth and pounded the rattle again.

Surely Nick couldn’t hear that, but he caught her eye from across the field, and her heart warmed at his look. He turned to exchange high fives with Ken. The two of them had taken over coaching the soccer team this year, and they were even more excited than the kids over every victory.

“Looks like we’ll be buying everyone ice cream again tonight,” Lorna said. “The traditional victory celebration is getting expensive.”

“We can handle it,” Emily said, smiling.

Truth to tell, there’d been some difficult times at the mill in the last two years, times when they’d all had to pinch their pennies. But thanks to Nick’s wise management, the mill was thriving. His idea to offer a profit-sharing plan to the employees had been pure genius.

Even James had radiated approval from his retirement home in Arizona. Now everyone in Mannington, it seemed, had a stake in how the mill did. It belonged to all of them in a way it never had before, and that had made them a stronger community.

The whistle blew, and Emily watched her three guys come toward them across the field. Her heart filled with love so intense that she had to blink back tears.

Thank you, Lord. Thank you for giving all of us a second chance to do things right.
